The police have split into teams to investigate the kidnap and murder of goldsmith Nitesh Bera, who was abducted on Tuesday from his jewellery shop on Avenue Road. The police ruled out the involvement of Bera’s employees or that of the engineer constructing Bera’s house.

They recorded the statement of Bera’s wife Uma on Friday. An investigating officer said: “It is true that Nitesh had some disputes with the engineer. But we have investigated the engineer’s role and found he did not have any connection with the murder.”

The police said Nitesh might have been abducted by miscreants who observed him during the course of the construction of his house on Avenue Road. The building’s grandeur might have led the culprits to assume that Bera was a rich man and abducting him would fetch a hefty ransom, said the police.

On Friday, the police visited Dabaspet, where his body was found. “We also tried to find out if the abductors left any evidence in the area, but we found nothing,” said an investigating officer.

Meanwhile, the CCB police have also joined the
investigating team and collected details about the route Bera used to travel to his workplace.
