A 57-year-old BEML employee died of an alleged cardiac arrest after he was punched in the chest, following a quarrel with two youth who allegedly teased his niece.

The victim, R Azagesan, 57, a deputy supervisor at the Tatra section of BEML, was a resident of 3rd Cross, Ayodhyadas Nagar, in DJ Halli police station limits.

Deputy commissioner of police (east) TG Krishna Bhat said the incident took place on Monday night. At 8.30 pm on Monday, Kriti (name changed), 14-year-old daughter of Vijaya Kumar, a cousin of Azagesan, was allegedly teased by two youth—Deepak Raj and Karna—when she went to a neighbourhood shop.

Kriti ran back to her house and complained to her mother, Nalini, about the incident. The episode did not end there. The duo returned to Kriti’s house 15 minutes later and picked up a quarrel with her mother.

According to Jayapal, elder brother of Azagesan, whose house is in the same neighbourhood, the youth, aged around 20 years, had an altercation with Nalini. Azagesan, who stays with his family in the same neighbourhood, happened to hear the quarrel and intervened.

He told the duo to leave immediately and not to create any nuisance. A heated argument ensued between the three, which ended with the youth punching Azagesan in the chest.
Azagesan, who had an open-heart surgery a year ago, felt nagging pain in the chest. He was rushed to the hospital by his nephew around 10 pm. The doctors could not save him and he was declared dead around 10.30 pm.

Culprits arrested
The DJ Halli police rushed to the scene on being informed by his relatives. The police arrested the two youth on Tuesday morning. The police have registered a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder based on the complaint lodged by Jayapal.

“We are suspecting that he died due to a cardiac arrest, following the quarrel. The autopsy report will reveal the exact cause of his death,” said a police official.

Azagesan is survived by his wife, three daughters and son.
