A 21-year-old engineering student was found hanging in a rented home she had been sharing with two college mates at Vignananagar.

Police said that Vasantha Kumari had committed suicide. She was a sixth-semester student at SET Engineering College, Kaggadasapura Main Road.  Manjula and Priyanka, her flatmates, woke around 6 am on Monday to find Vasantha Kumari hanging from a dupatta tied to a ceiling fan. No suicide note was found.

“We last saw her around 11 pm. She had had dinner with us, and was studying when Manjula and I went to sleep in the other room,” Priyanka said, adding that she suspected that Kumari might have taken the extreme step as she had been ailing.

“Vasantha had been suffering from severe stomachache since the beginning of this academic year,” Priyanka reportedly told investigators. Police, however, suspected that the girl might have been showing symptoms of psychosomatic disorder, as she feared academic failure.

Some students at the college said the deceased student had not performed well in her semester examination. Members of the faculty had warned her of failure. “We are investigating all possible angles,” a police officer said.

Kumari, a native of Kommanahalli in Nelamangala, moved into the rented accommodation after joining the college. She was the elder daughter of farmer Siddappa. The body was handed over to relatives after a post-mortem.
