The one word that sums up Bangalore weather over the last four to five days is — erratic. With the mornings being cold, nights warm and afternoons scorching, Bangaloreans are having a tough time dealing with it.

Even as people greeted the first rain of the year on Monday evening, city doctors warned of viral infections that are expected to rise in the coming days.

So, it’s time again to brace against headache, body ache, sore throat, runny nose and fever. “The most common problem during temperature fluctuations is viral infection and with a spells of rain now, we are expecting the number of infection cases to rise in another three to four days,” said Dr Aravind Jagadeesh, consultant, general medicines and diabetology, Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Hospital. As of now, the doctor has four to five cases of viral infection every day.

Senior citizens and those suffering from diabetes, hypertension or cardiac complications should be extra careful this season, suggested Dr Aravind. “In case of mild symptoms, one should start with steam inhalation and hot-water gargling and if symptoms persist for more than three days, it is better to consult a physician. If not treated properly, this may develop into pneumonia,” he added.

It’s also time for children to be careful. Though not many cases of viral infection have been reported till now, respiratory-track infection and gastroenteritis cases can increase, given the weather change, anticipated Dr Preethi Galagali, consultant pediatrician, Chord Road Hospital. “Of late, I have been getting about four to five cases of food poisoning every day, which may be due to fluctuation in the weather. Thus, it is important to ensure that children only eat freshly cooked food,” she said.

As for the preventive measures for viral infection, she said, it is important to maintain personal hygiene. “Parents should ensure that children wash hands properly every time they come home. Also use a handkerchief to cough or sneeze, if you have a cold. This helps avoid spread of the infection,” said Dr Preethi.
