“It is not enough to celebrate Kanaka Jayanti. Understand the message that Kanakadasa gave us and to adopt it in our lives,” chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda said on Monday at the Kanakashree awards function at Ravindra Kalakshethra. The Kanakashree awards were given to Dr TN Nagarathna, for the year 2009, Lakappa Gowda (2010) and Prof Jyothi Hosura (2011).

Dr Nagarathna was honoured for her research on Haridasa literature and her contribution to the field, while Lakappa Gowda, who has compiled Kanakadasa’s poems, and Prof Jyothi Hosura, who has conducted extensive research on Kanakadasa and is working on Haridasa and Kanaka literature, were also honoured for their work. The award carries a cash prize of Rs5 lakh and a citation.

The chief minister said that though Kanakadasa fought caste-based prejudices in the 17th century, even today, this social evil persists.

“Even among educated people in high positions, I have observed that instead of a broad mindset, it has only becomes narrower,” he said. “There is a limit to what a government can do and the society needs to implement activities that will help in its transformation,” he added.

Gowda said people may have different reasons for declaring Kanaka Jayanti a holiday, whether it is to appease a particular vote bank or as one among other jayantis celebrated here, “To make the celebration meaningful, we have to use it as a platform to discuss and spread Kanakadasa’s message,” he said. “I don’t know

if we can give anymore awards,” he added on a lighter note, but hoped that “more people would take efforts like the three awardees to do more to transform society.”

Kannada and culture minister Govind Karjol said: “There is no point in merely celebrating various jayantis if we are unable to inculcate the values taught by these great people. There has to be a transformation in the mindset of people in order to show our respect for them.”
