Five killed, four hurt in wall collapse in Bangalore

Five construction workers were killed and four others injured when the wall of an illegal under-construction warehouse collapsed on them at Chattekerepalya near Bannerghatta on Wednesday.

Five construction workers were killed and four others injured when the wall of an illegal under-construction warehouse collapsed on them at Chattekerepalya near Bannerghatta on Wednesday.
Pargu Yadav, 40, Rajib Poddar, 60, Sanjeev Kumar, 25, Rajib Sahu aka Raju, 60 and Jugesh Tateet, 40, all natives of Bihar, were those killed in the incident.

Sonu, 35, Santosh, 18 and Paramananda, 35, all from Bihar have been admitted to the Victoria Hospital with injuries. Nagarjun, 22, of Gulbarga, was discharged after administrating first-aid.

Nagarjun said they were plastering the 20-ft high wall on the western side of the warehouse when it caved in around 11.30 am.
“I was on top of the wall with four others. When it collapsed, I fell along with its debris, and was rendered unconscious. When I regained consciousness, I found myself in the hospital,” he said
Six labourers were at the foot of the wall when the mishap happened. All of them were buried under the debris. Only one man escaped death.

Energy minister Shobha Karandlaje, who visited the scene, said separate investigations would be conducted into the incident by the public works department and the department of rural development and panchayat raj. “The police investigation will take its normal course,” she said.

The minister said that the chief minister had declared a compensation of `1 lakh each to the kin of the deceased, and Rs25,000 each to the injured.

Labour minister BN Bache Gowda, who also visited the accident scene, announced an additional Rs50,000 each to the relatives of the dead persons, and Rs10,000 to Rs20,000 each to those who were hurt. Home minister R Ashoka said that a criminal case would be slapped against Srinivas Reddy, the warehouse owner.

The police said they had registered a case under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) against Reddy and the labour contractor, Raju. Both of them have been missing ever since the accident.
