Farmers intensified their protest on Monday by declaring that they would not move an inch from the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) premises until the government commits to fulfilling their demands.

They demanded the immediate commencement of the proposed Peripheral Road Project, connecting Tumkur Road and Hosur Road.

The BDA had acquired 67 km of farmland in 2005 between Tumkur Road and Hosur Road, agreeing to pay a sum of `10 lakh to `15 lakh an acre.

The BDA had issued notices to the farmers but even after seven years, the project has not started. Now, the price of land in the proposed area is `2 crore per acre. The farmers
are demanding `1 crore per acre for their land.

Ever since the acquisition, the farmers were not allowed to sell their land or do farming. “Many farmers have turned into labourers.

They have not been able to meet the basic needs of the family. Mass migration is taking place. BDA, with the government, is delaying the process,” said Raghu, a farmer from Anekal.
Meanwhile, the BDA premises were turned into a small village. Farmers have brought livestock with them. As many as 30 cows and 100 sheep were found in the BDA campus. About 150 farmers are spending the night there.

“We have brought ration for seven days. We will cook here and will continue the protest round the clock till the BDA fixes the amount to `1 crore per acre,” said Rama Reddy from Peenya.

The other option is that the BDA must drop the project and give NOC to the farmers, angry protesters said. The protest was taken up by Karnataka State Farmers’ Association, Hasiru Sene and Peripheral Ring Road Struggle Committee. BDA commissioner Bharat Lal Meena tried to pacify the agitators but in vain.
Avoid Bellary Road

The commuters who take the New Airport Road are advised to shift to parallel routes as there are chances of road blockage. Over thousands of farmers are expected to land at BDA premises on Tuesday and stage a protest, which might turn violent.
