Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa was quick to announce Rs2 lakh as compensation to each of the families of the nine people killed in the Carlton Towers tragedy on February 23. But even a month after the deaths, the promised compensation is yet to reach the families.

The families said no one from the government had approached them yet. They had also not been told whom to approach for the compensation, they said.

“We got to know about the compensation from the media,” Uday Vijayan, who lost his son Akhil Uday in the tragedy, told mediapersons on Monday. “We have, however, not got any compensation from the government,” he said. He was speaking at a press conference in the city.

Vijayan said the media covered the fire incident and the lack of safety in buildings like Carlton Towers exhaustively. “But there was not much on what is meant by the monetary compensation announced by the government and how to obtain it,” he said.

He said the tragedy had created a lot of public awareness about the risk of a fire accident in high-rise buildings.

Shantha Kumar, husband of another victim, Benzi Kumar, said the family did not even receive a condolence message from any official. “I am living in HRBR Layout with some sweet memories of my wife Benzi Kumar,” he said. “My daughters Natasha, 11, and Nisha, 9, are yet to come to terms with the loss of their mother.”

Officers at the JB Nagar police station, where a case has been registered against the building’s owners, said they had handed over the necessary documents to the families of those who died to help them obtain the compensation.

“We got copies of the first information report (FIR) and the post-mortem report from the police,” SK Suman Peter, brother-in-law of Fayaz Pasha ,who died in the fire incident, told DNA. “They have given us all the documents, which will be useful for any legal proceedings.  But the police did not inform us how to get the compensation,” he said.

Home minister VS Acharya said that families of the deceased could seek help at the Bangalore deputy commissioner’s office, civil court complex next to Cauvery Bhavan, KG Road, for help in seeking the  compensation amount.
