The results for the II PU final examinations re-valuation were out on Friday and if nothing else, it proved that many evaluators had not done their job well.

The state pre-university education (PUE) department has decided not to take it easy. It will take stringent actions against teachers who were careless with the evaluation work. The action could result in withholding of the increment for such teachers. Showcause notices from the department will reach these erring lecturers soon seeking explanation.

Sources said that the department had proposed for a complete amendment in the punishment rules for the erring lecturers.
As per existing rules, the department can charge a penalty and debar such teachers from evaluation work for at least five examinations.

“The problem with debarring them is that most of them like to keep off evaluation work and so make mistakes deliberately. Currently, the department is sticking to collecting penalties,” said an official.

The same rule allows the department to withdraw the remuneration paid for the evaluators if the marks difference is above 10.

“In the re-valuation, if the marks difference is more than 10, we withdraw the entire remuneration paid to such evaluators,” the official remarked.

However, the department has realised that this kind of punishment is not helping , hence it has proposed for complete reforms in examinations work.

“We have been thinking of stringent measures, including witholding the increment of those who have committed mistakes in the evaluation work. We are planning to do an entire examination and evaluation reform and will soon prepare a draft and send it for the government’s approval,” said PUE department director Rashmi V.

“Compared to the previous year, the amount of mistakes found this year has reduced. However, we have prepared a list of common errors to avoid such mistakes in supplementary exams. The list would be circulated to all the evaluators. Along with that we will give them strict instructions at the time of evaluation itself,” she added.

The department would refund the re-valuation fee paid by students who have a difference in the marks. It has also decided to make evaluation an online process starting with this supplementary exam. “This would help students know how the marks have been awarded and why they scored low,” Rashmi V said.

This year, about 34 lakh answer-scripts were evaluated in the final exams with about 18,000 lecturers involved in evaluation work. About 3,794 applications were received for re-valuation and out of that, marks were changed for 2,114 scripts; 840 were found un-valued for a few questions.
