Most aspiring engineers who secured good ranks in the Common Entrance Test (CET) 2011 and selected their dream colleges under the government quota in the counselling process were in for a shock when they reported to the institutes for admission.
The colleges demanded excess amounts under various heads from the candidates. In most cases, the additional money demanded has turned out to be as much as the prescribed fee by the CET for government quota seats.
The actual fee prescribed for government quota seats in engineering colleges is Rs33,090. The students also have to pay an extra amount of Rs3,090 towards university fees, which is as laid down before admission.
Once the seats are confirmed, the students pay DDs for this amount at the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) at the time of counselling.However, several private colleges, including prestigious ones based in Bangalore, are now demanding an additional Rs30,000 towards ‘other expenses’.
A merit student who chose a government seat at Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering (DSCE), Bangalore, approached DNA with official receipts confirming that the college had collected excess fees from him.
Sumanth (name changed), who figured well within the first 2,000 ranks, said that he had not been informed about the excess amount earlier. “I paid Rs33,090 at Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) and received the admission order. But I was shocked when I actually went to the college to complete the admission formalities,” he said.
The college authorities asked him to pay Rs30,270. When he questioned them, they said it was for ‘other expenses’. “Totally, the fee which I paid has now crossed Rs60,000. What is the use of getting admission under the government quota? This is sheer harassment of students and parents,” Sumanth said.
The college authorities have also reportedly told the students that they have to pay an annual fee of Rs40,000 from next year. “We were told by CET officials that we have to pay the same fee of Rs33,090 every year, but the college authorities are not following even that,” said Sumanth.
According to the consensual agreement, the colleges have unanimously agreed to charge Rs33,090; and representatives of private engineering colleges’ association have signed the agreement in the regard.
However, after filling all the seats, the colleges were harassing students and parents by demanding excess amounts.
Authorities of Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering were not available for comment.
