Though the voters’ list enrolment figure in the state looked robust at 94%, the Silicon Valley’s contribution in this regard was the lowest at 74%. Revealing these statistics, election commissioner VS Sampath on Saturday said special attention was required for Bangalore.

“I am conducting meetings with Election Commission and BBMP officers to give a boost in this regard,” he said at a press conference organised by Election Commission and NGO Janaagraha on Maintenance of Proper Urban Electoral (PURE) Rolls. Sampath lauded the support shown by youth in the process of revision of electoral list. In Himachal Pradesh, 95% of the voters are youth, while in Karnataka it is 85%, he added.

Sampath further said voters’ list is gaining credibility as more people are enrolling. All eligible residents should get enrolled in the voters’ list and photo identity cards must be issued to them. The process is being taken up from April 16 to April 30. The old electoral list is being considered as draft and verification process will be taken up. During the time of enrolment, officers of Election Commission of India, BBMP and volunteers of a NGO will take up door-to-door exercise of enrolment, he explained. “Three weeks will be provided for making claims and objections. Before May 23, they will be sorted out and we will come up with a new electoral list by June 15,” Sampath said.

Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy lauded the attempt by Janaagraha to prepare a pure voters’ list in Shanthinagar constituency, in coordination with Election Commission. He said democracy would benefit in the process.

Former chief election commissioner TS Krishnamurthy said the revision of voters’ list with association of NGO was a landmark programme and should be replicated in all the metros.

Karnataka’s chief electoral officer Suranjana CS explained that the voters’ list was being revised in association with Janaagraha and if they were able to reach 80% to 90% of the new voters, it would be a success. Various programmes were launched for reforming the electoral process; creating a pure voters’ list was one among them. “By steps like door-to-door campaign, particularly on Sundays, we are hopeful of creating a pure voters’ list,” he said.
