Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda has called off his tour to Japan, a trip he had planned to woo investors for the forthcoming Global Investors’ Meet in Bangalore, in view of drought in the state.

Gowda announced this at a press conference at his official residence, Krishna, on Thursday. He said instead of going to Japan, he would go on an extensive tour of drought-hit districts from April 16 to April 18. He said that on April 19, he would chair an all-party meeting to discuss the drought.

He said worst-hit taluks would get an additional grant of Rs30 lakh towards ensuring supply of drinking water. He ordered that the government officials should stay at the headquarters and should not go on leave.

The chief minister appreciated the efforts made by ministers Umesh Katti, Jagadish Shettar and Basavaraj Bommai—loyalists of former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa—who succeeded in getting water for Karnataka from Koyna reservoir in Maharashtra.

He declined to comment when asked if he cancelled his trip to Japan in the backdrop of the comments of former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, who chided him for going abroad when the state was reeling under the impact of drought. Yeddyurappa had begun his state-wide tour after Gowda declared he would not organise conventions in the backdrop of drought in the state.

The statement had come when Yeddyurappa was holding conventions and receiving felicitations. The programmes were being organised to show the former chief minister’s might to the party’s top leadership to press for his reinstatement.  After Gowda’s comment, Yeddyurappa left for his state-wide tour in a huff.

However, he cut short his tour when BJP’s in-charge of Karnataka Dharmendra Pradhan came to Bangalore to discuss leadership issue. Opposition leaders criticised Yeddyurappa for this and he again left to visit drought-hit districts, questioning Gowda’s trip to Japan at this juncture.
