A two-year-old boy died on Thursday allegedly because of drinking contaminated water supplied by the BWSSB at JJ Nagar. Four children and a woman have been hospitalised after they had bouts of diarrhoea and vomitting.

The victim, Chandan, was the son of Narasimha, a pourakarmika, and a resident of Venkataswamy Garden, JJ Nagar. Narasimha said his son was suffering from diarrhoea and vomitting since Wednesday.

He took him to St Mary’s Child Welfare Centre at Royan Circle in Chamarajpet, but the baby died in the early hours of Thursday.
Narasimha alleged that his son died after drinking contaminated water supplied by the BWSSB. He said that more than 25 children had fallen ill in his locality. Some of them have recovered after treatment, while others are still undergoing treatment in various hospitals.

BBMP’s west zone deputy commissioner Umananda Rai, along with other BBMP officials and BWSSB officials, visited the area on Thursday. Royapuram corporator CS Radhakrishna, too, visited the area.

BWSSB officials collected water samples from the area. Rai ordered BBMP officials to collect data regarding the affected children and directed the BBMP health officials to collect water samples. Narasimha said the water that was being supplied in his area was contaminated due to seepage of sewage. Lingaraju, another resident of the area, said the BWSSB water pipes were installed 40 years ago and were in a bad condition.

The four children admitted to St Mary’s Child Welfare Centre at Chamarajapet are  Sadiya Farhin, 7; Nikhil, 1; Mounesh, 5; and Bhoomika, 2. All are residents of JJ Nagar. Shoba, 19, and a woman were also admitted to the hospital. She blamed the contaminated water supplied in her area for her illness.
