A fire broke out in the clubhouse of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), located off MG Road, in the wee hours of Tuesday, destroying documents, among other things.

No injuries or loss of life was caused by the fire suspected to be sparked by an electrical short-circuit. The exact cause of the fire was still being ascertained.

Speculation was rife over the importance of the destroyed documents. The KSCA management said the documents were not important ones.

“We lost some furniture and a couple of computers and some documents. None of the documents are important ones, as the main office has been shifted to the new building complex,” said MP Ramesh, chief executive officer of the clubhouse.

Fire and emergency services officials said five fire tenders were rushed to the scene. They said the situation could have been worse, if the fire had spread to adjacent kitchen, where gas cylinders were kept.

Chief fire officer (east) KU Ramesh said the fire extinguishers kept at the clubhouse were not properly used. “The equipment they had were handheld fire extinguishers, which should be used during the initial stages of fire. It had not happened,” said CFO Ramesh.

Clubhouse employees said a television set in the room first caught fire, which spread to furniture. A security guard informed his superiors, who called the fire and emergency control room.

Firefighter Ramesh said fire tenders from High Grounds and Mayo Hall stations were sent to douse the blaze. “We brought the fire under control within an hour,” he added.

Initial estimates pegged the loss at Rs3 lakh to Rs4 lakh. The exact loss caused by the fire was not immediately known.

A series of fire accidents have rocked the country’s IT hub over the past few months.
