Under a heavy debt burden and seeing no solutions for repaying them, a well-established doctor in Valmikinagar, Dr Mohammed Amanullah, 61, his wife, and two sons took their own lives early Friday morning at their residence.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Sonia Narang said Dr Amanullah, his wife Navida Banu, 50, his elder son Ehtesham Rasheed, 28, also a doctor, and his younger son Afam Rasheed, 26, a final year MBBS student, committed suicide by injecting themselves with a heavy dose of an anaesthetic drug.

Four empty bottles of the drug, 10ml each, were found at the spot.
All the four took the extreme step on the second floor of their four-storied building, of which the ground and first floor were being used as their nursing home, Khuda Care Nursing Home. The top two floors were used by the family as their residence, located on 4th Cross, 2nd Main in Valmikinagar, right opposite Gopalan Mall.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that the family had run into severe debt after taking loans from several banks and private money lenders. Although the police have not identified the volume of debt, the investigators, after speaking to various people known closely to the family, suspect that it could be as high as Rs5 crore.

The doctor’s family had taken loans to open his Limra Nursing Home at Shamanna Garden on Mysore Road, a year ago. He had also taken loans to fund his sons’ medical education.

The police also found out that some private money lenders were after Dr Amanullah for repayments and had also approached the police.

The incident came to light at around 6am when a nursing home staffer, Rihana, came to the third floor residence  of Dr Amanullah. When she could not find anyone she entered the rooms and found the Dr Amanullah’s adopted daughter, Naziya, 20, was locked inside one of the rooms which had been bolted from the outside.

However, Naziya was fast asleep and oblivious to the tragic happenings in her house a floor below.
