The cricket World Cup fever has taken a toll on many in the city, who are eagerly waiting to shop, ahead of Ugadi festival on Monday. Residents preferred to remain indoors on Saturday, as India was battling Sri Lanka in the World Cup finals. So, shopping malls and commercial areas are expected to see a surge in the crowds on Sunday.

Sumana K, a working woman from Koramangala, has a long list of shopping items for Ugadi. However, she could not do her shopping in the last few days, as her family members and friends have been busy watching the world cup matches. "In fact, this year, I have more shopping to do as many relatives have come down due to an extended weekend. Sunday will be a busy day for me," she said.
Many other Bangaloreans also expressed the same view that they had reserved Sunday for festival shopping, creating a buzz that many markets and shopping places would be flooded with people.

Krishnappa M, a shop owner at the Malleswaram market said that demand for flowers would be huge, as Ugadi marks the beginning of a new year for Hindus and several poojas will be conducted. "There will be demand for neem, mango leaves, jaggery and flowers which are the essential items for Ugadi. Toor dal is a must as it is essential for preparing obbattu or holige, a traditional sweet dish for the festival," he said.

Nirupama N, a resident of Vijayanagar said that she decided to finish her shopping on Saturday morning itself. "However, not many shops were open and I was not able to do much. Those shop owners who had opened their shops said that they were shutting them by noon," she said.
