Counselling for undergraduate engineering seats for academic year 2010-11 has been postponed by another week from July 7 to July 14.

The move will delay the entire academic calendar. Courses which had a September start will now begin from the first week of October.

This will also push back the casual round of counselling for medical and dental courses.

The COMED-K, counselling for engineering seats by the private managements, too, would get delayed. COMED-K has planned to hold the counselling for medical courses later this week.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) ascribes the delay to a technical error.

AICTE left out seven top colleges out of the matrix, including People’s Education Society Institute of Technology (PESIT), MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT), BMS College of Engineering, RV College of Engineering (RVCE), after their approvals were not updated in the final data.

“We can start counselling on July 7 as per the earlier announcement, but if we do that, the meritorious students would not get seats in these top colleges. We don’t want to create trouble for students,” said Aravind Limbavali, state minister for higher education.

These colleges requested postponement of counselling to include their seats in the matrix.

“We have requested the AICTE to at least permit us to use the last year’s seat matrix to begin the counselling as per schedule,” Limbavali added.
