Inspired by the recent victory in Chikmagalur-Udupi Lok Sabha by-poll, Congress leaders put up a big show of unity by launching ‘Congressige Banni, Badalavane Thanni’ (join Congress and usher in change) to defeat BJP in the next assembly elections.

The Congress leaders launched the campaign at Gollarahatti, on the outskirts of Bangalore, by beating drums. Leader of opposition in legislative assembly, Siddaramaiah, launched a scathing attack on the BJP government by calling it the most corrupt government the state had seen, adding that it should be rooted out.

Training his guns at former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa, he said mineral wealth worth about Rs2,000 crore had been looted because of illegal mining. “BJP patriarch LK Advani, who is demanding that the UPA government at the centre bring back black money stashed in foreign banks, should first take action to bring back Rs1 lakh crore looted by BJP leaders in the state,” he said.

Criticising Yeddyurappa’s tour of drought-hit areas, Siddaramaiah asked why Yeddyurappa did not care for the drought-affected people when he was relishing the luxuries of a five-star resort along with his supporting MLAs. BJP leaders are too busy fighting for power even as the people are suffering from lack of drinking water and power, he added.

Further, he said chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda could not understand the gravity of the drought situation by holding video conferences, sitting in an air-conditioned room. The BJP leaders should reach out to the affected people and get the bureaucracy to provide succour to the affected people, Siddaramaiah said.

Congress leaders would tour the entire state from April 10 to draw the government’s attention to the plight of people affected by drought, he stated. KPCC president G Parameshwar said the state Congress leaders would tour the state in three teams and submit a report to Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi on April 28, when she is scheduled to participate in a programme to be held in Tumkur. The tussle for power among BJP leaders was an insult to the suffering people of the state as nobody is bothered about drinking water crisis, he said, and added that the time had come to bring a change in the state. Congress is the only party that could prove to be the ideal alternative to provide a responsive government, he said. AICC general secretary in-charge of party affairs in Karnataka, Madusudan Mistry, Union minister KH Muniyappa, senior Congress leaders Oscar Fernandes, BK Hariprasad, MV Rajashekaran and others were present.
