The Karnataka police is going its own technologically-sound way to ensure that life becomes easier for citizens and officials going about procedures involving approvals from the department. The move is part of the state’s plans to implement the Karnataka Guarantee of Services to Citizens Act.

The government has promised to provide services to citizens within a prescribed timeframe with 13 services pertaining to the police department being listed in the Act. The deadlines were already there, but now the cases would have to be disposed of within the stipulated timeframe failing which the officer would have to pay a penalty.

The computer wing of the state police initiating this programme has already been operational for six months, and has generated an encouraging feedback from police officials who are being trained in 5o locations across the state.

The district police officer or the commissioner of police will now be able to check the status of any application received for verification.

Police computer wing ADGP Praveen Sood, who is behind the entire project, said, “The project is in its first phase right now. There will be much more to it. As of now, the facility is available only for the police department so as to ease out the burden of files by using technology.”

“Officials entering data into the system will allow them access to any file of any offender across the state, because all the information is stored at the data centre in Madiwala covering 906 police stations and 500 higher offices through VPN lines,” he said.
The second phase, to be operational in a month, will help people track the relevant services. Accessing this feature will first have to be approved by the police through the Citizen Centric Portal by using a 15-digit acknowledgement number given at the time of filing a complaint or passport verification, etc.

The third phase, which will be complete in June, will add a mobile feature. Citizens would then be able to get SMS updates about their FI` and passport verification status, among other things.
