Students clearing the Common Entrance Test will have to pay 10% more fees for government-quota seats from this year.

The decision to increase fees for government-quota seats for undergraduate engineering, medical and dental courses was taken at a meeting chaired  by chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda on Saturday.

Members of the Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka (COMED-K) and the Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges Association (KUPECA) were also present at the meeting.

“After a prolonged discussion, it has been decided that fees will be raised by 10% for all the courses,” an official of the state higher education department told DNA. “The demand from the management side was higher, but the CM somehow managed to convince them.”

Department officials said the government agreed to increase fees for all the three courses after a period of five years. (The `5,000 fee hike of 2011 had only been for government-quota engineering seats.)

From this year, engineering students will have to pay `36,900, medical students `38,500 and dental students `27,500 per annum. This fee structure will not apply to management and COMED-K seats.

Meanwhile, management representatives will hold a meeting on Sunday. “We have called for a meeting tomorrow and will place this decision before our members,” said Panduranga Shetty, chairman, KUPECA. The representatives are said to be thinking of increasing fees for management-quota seats by 10%. COMED-K is said to be planning a similar fee hike for COMED-K-quota seats.
