The warranty of 80 enforcement cameras installed in the city serving as private eye for traffic police have expired and five other cameras do not function.

The traffic police department is mulling over sending the cameras for annual maintenance charge (AMC) service, because going in for new cameras seems to be a better option as the cost difference between maintenance and new purchase is marginal. Additional commissioner of police (traffic and safety) MA Saleem said they were yet to decide on the cameras.

“Altogether, we’ve installed 179 surveillance cameras. Among them, five are defunct and for another 80, the warranty expired recently. With the remaining cameras, we are managing traffic management and enforcement,” he said.

“The service expenditure is close to the cost of a new camera. So, we are yet to decide on sending them for service or going in for new cameras,” Saleem said.

There are plans to install 500 new CCTV cameras in the city to monitor crime incidents and movement of criminals on sensitive streets.
They will also help the traffic police in monitoring traffic enforcement.

“We will get the link with those cameras and can see (traffic) movements at specified locations which will help us ensure better traffic management,” he said.

A senior  police officer said enforcement cameras would help police in better traffic management, monitoring law and order situation, management of the special events like public gathering and processions, incident management and information dissemination to road users.

The visuals captured on the cameras are transferred to the traffic control centre (TMC) through IP network.
The CCTVs to be installed by the police will be connected to this IP and and they will monitor traffic with the help those footage.
