A family in Vidyaranyapura returned to their house on Wednesday after a five-day visit to their native place, and found someone had been living there in their absence.

Those who stayed there had left telltale signs: soiled clothes including undergarments, a crowbar, unwashed utensils in the kitchen, crumpled bed sheets, and even a used condom.

The family also found that the unknown visitors had drilled a hole through the bedroom wall to enter — and exit — the house.

Without disturbing the possible evidence investigators might find, the family informed the night beat constables. The family also told them that the burglars had taken away some electronic gadgets.

The policemen arrived, saw, and left, asking them to lodge a complaint the next day.

The family, who preferred anonymity, said the policemen were worried over disturbing their senior officer, who was on leave.

After several rounds of the police station the next day, investigators turned up at the house in Nanjappa Layout around 5 pm on Thursday. They noted down the details of the burglary.

The family was disappointed when the police did not look for fingerprints. The victims were sure that the burglars would have left fingerprints, since they had spent hours — perhaps days — in the house.

“There was no need to take fingerprints,” Vidyaranyapura police inspector KM Subramanya explained. “Criminals are very smart these days. They wear gloves or socks while committing a crime. We will take a few months to solve the case.”

The inspector offered further explanation. “We do not track criminals through fingerprints. We will track them through their clothes,’’ he said, dismissing investigators collecting fingerprints as just conventional methods, or things shown on TV serials and films.

When told about the developments, deputy commissioner of police (north) HS Revanna did not sound convinced about the investigation method.

“I will ensure that the case is solved. I will instruct my officers to follow the necessary procedures,” he said.

A couple of hours after contacting the DCP, the family told this correspondent that a team of investigators had visited their house to collect evidence, all over again.
