Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa cancelled all his official engagements and held a series of meetings with legal experts on Friday, a day after the Lokayukta special court ordered an inquiry into allegations of land scam involving his family members.

Following the meetings, Yeddyurappa decided to adopt a wait-and-watch policy, it has been learnt. He would not be moving the high court against the Lokayukta court’s order.

Legal experts have reportedly told Yeddyurappa that there was nothing to worry about the court order since it was just an inquiry.

The Lokayukta police could only interview the chief minister and record his statement, and no further action would be taken, the experts said, adding that the police attached to the anti-graft body did not have the power to arrest or register an FIR against him.

One of the legal advisors of Yeddyurappa said the chief minister was “very safe” till May 4. “He may face a problem only if the inquiry report goes against him.”

It has been learnt that even if the Lokayukta police find evidence, the defendants in the case, Yeddyurappa’s son-in-law, Sohan Kumar would be challenging it in the high court, and not the chief minister.

Meanwhile, former advocate-general and senior advocate BV Acharya felt the court order would not have any serious consequences.

“Yeddyurappa will be in trouble only if the Lokayukta police find enough evidence against him. Even then, he has the option of challenging it in the high court. But at this stage, it is not required to challenge the special court order,” he said.

“After recording statements from the complaints, the special court judge felt there was no sufficient material to issue summons or dismiss the complaint against the chief minister. According to the law, the court has the option of ordering an investigation under Section 156 directly or asking the police or any other private person to enquire and submit a report. In this case, the court has ordered an enquiry to collect all possible evidence and submit it to the court to decide either to issue summons or dismiss the complaint,” he said.

Meanwhile, Roopkumar Datta, additional director-general of police (Lokayukta) said: “In all likelihood, an FIR would be filed on Saturday.”
