This flyover was built to ease the traffic woes, but has only made life difficult for motorists and pedestrians.

The Jayadeva Flyover, inaugurated in 2005, was meant to reduce traffic congestion for those travelling from Banashankri towards Bannerghatta Road and vice versa, and those commuting from Nimhans towards HSR Layout. But the traffic situation has become more chaotic, with an increase in volumes and incidents of rash driving.

“It is difficult to drive on this road during evening. We get stuck for hours in traffic jams. The road is not only chaotic, but dangerous as there are rash drivers, especially those driving cabs and autorickshaws, who don’t stick to their lane,” said Raj Bala, a resident of Bannerghatta Road.

The intersection is also dangerous as all the roads converge under the flyover and there is a blinding pillar right in the middle. The flyover runs up from JP Nagar 6th phase towards Bannerghatta Road, with supporting pillars all the way.

“This is very dangerous, even though it is necessary for structural balance of the flyover. There is a pillar in the middle of the road, which is like a blinder to people taking a right turn from Nimhans towards JP Nagar. Since there is traffic coming from the other side as well, the road gets very congested, with people finding free space to make their turns,” said Tejaswini K, a software engineer who works on Bannerghatta Road.

The pedestrians too have been given a raw deal. The walkways are in poor shape, with barely any space to walk. Hence, the pedestrians are forced to walk on the road. They have to even wait for the bus on the road. “Since there is no bus shelter, we are forced to stand on the road. It is dangerous as vehicles come zooming at us and scare us. If we don’t stand on the road, we cannot see the bus route number,” complained Vishalakshi, a teacher who works in JP Nagar.

Though there is ample space to park vehicles under the flyover, it has been left vacant.

“A vacant site nearby is used for parking, leading to more traffic congestions,” said Ragu Raman, a resident of JP Nagar.
