It seems imminent, a whole lot of private universities are coming up in the state and are bound to knock traditional universities down a notch (or two) with their breakthrough numbers.

There are more than 10 applications pending before the state higher education ministry seeking approval to set up private universities in the state. That's when the ministry has already cleared about five applications seeking approval.

As per the information provided by the state higher education department, it has cleared the approvals for Manipal Foundation of Education, Sri Bhagavan Mahaveer Jain Institute, MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology, National Science University and PES group of institutions. The agreement will be signed between the government and the institutions in the Global Investors Meet (GIM) 2012, which is scheduled to be held on June 7 and 8.

According to department officials, education institutions in the state are much interested in establishing private universities. “We are overwhelmed with applications seeking permission to set up private universities in the state. Some of them we have already cleared and some more are still pending,” said a senior official from the department.

In 2011, the state had granted permission to Azim Premji University which was the first private university of the state. Premji University specialises in teachers' education in the state and it is already up and running. The second private university was the Alliance University that focuses on business courses.

The National Science University that is coming up in the state will concentrate on science education. The board of trustees of the university claimed that the university will be unique.

Meanwhile, the Jain Group is looking at urban design and aerospace, while the PES Group focus on engineering and management. D Jawahar, CEO of PES Group, said: “Yes, we have applied and we will concentrate mainly on engineering and management studies in the state.”

An authority of Jain Group also confirmed the application and said, “We already have got the permission from government and we will establish the university soon. We will concentrate mainly on urban design and aerospace.”

However, each institution needs to deposit Rs25 crore as stability fund before setting up the university. The state Higher Education Council will send a team to inspect the infrastructure facilities in the proposed universities.

The state government will have to prepare a separate Act for each university as per the Supreme Court direction in the Chhattisgarh case.
