The last time Basanti danced in Karnataka was to save her beau Veeru’s life. She broke into a song (despite being warned not to by Veeru), danced on shattered glass (despite being barefoot), and let Gabbar and his goons ogle at her (despite hating their guts). And her reel life antics gave Jai enough time to come and rescue them.

But that was reel life. In real life, however, Hema Malini (Basanti in Sholay) won’t have a Veeru to save or a Jai to come rescue her as she prepares to enter Parliament through Karnataka. There’ll be a lot of Gabbars and goons, though.

On Friday, BJP announced that it had selected the Dream Girl of Bollywood as its candidate to contest the Rajya Sabha by-polls from Karnataka, to fill the void caused by the death of Rajashekara Murthy.

The BJP’s choice is sure to leave the big guns in Karnataka disgruntled: Chief minister BS Yeddyurappa and party state president KS Eshwarappa wanted the state’s special representative in Delhi, Dhananjay Kumar, to enter Rajya Sabha. But ruffled feathers are being assuaged by the party leadership with the logic that Hema Malini’s tenure will last just a little over a year as the term of Rajashekara Murthy was to end in June 2012.

By-polls for the Rajya Sabha seat from the state legislative assembly constituency are scheduled to be held on March 4 and would be an easy gallop for the tonga girl who became a household name in the state after Sholay’s release in 1975. The movie was shot in the hilly terrain of Ramanagaram, 40km from Bangalore.

For those who came in late or never saw Sholay, here’s a quick run-down: Hema Malini plays a chirpy tonga driver and Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) are two ex-cons who help Thakur (Sanjeev Kumar) regain his lost pride, avenge the death of his family members, and save Ramgarh from the marauding dacoit, Gabbar Singh (Amzad Khan), and his goons.
