The RSS on Wednesday cracked the whip at the squabbling BJP leaders as it intervened to end the crisis that erupted following former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa’s demand for reinstatement as the chief minister.

RSS leaders MC Jayadev, Mangesh Bende, Jagadish Karanth, Mukund, Su Ramanna and Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat held a marathon meeting with chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda, state BJP president KS Eshwarappa and Yeddyurappa at the residence of BJP MLC Lehar Singh to resolve the crisis as the January 15 deadline set by Yeddyurappa to fulfil his demand is fast approaching. V Sateesh and Santosh, the RSS leaders overseeing the organisational issues of the BJP, were also present.

The RSS leaders did some blunt talking by asking Yeddyurappa to accept that it is not possible to replace Gowda and Eshwarappa according to the whims and fancies of an individual. However, the RSS leaders assured Yeddyurappa he would be treated with respect that a leader of his stature deserved. BJP’s national leaders would choose an appropriate time to give him a suitable post to make use of his experience and charisma, said sources.

The three top BJP leaders were instructed not to make public comments on sensitive issues concerning the government and the party. They were instructed to work to build the party to ensure it can return to power with an overwhelming majority in the next election.

Referring to Yeddyurappa’s proposed state-wide tour, the sources said, it should be conducted as a party programme and not a personal programme.

Yeddyurappa is said to have expressed displeasure at the way he is being treated after he was slapped with corruption cases. He also vented his anger at Gowda, accusing the chief minister of changing his attitude after assuming office. Yeddyurappa said:

“There were a few minor differences within the party and they will be sorted out. We have agreed to work together to win at least 150 seats in the next assembly election and 25 seats in the Lok Sabha elections.’’

Though BJP leaders presented a united front, Yeddyurappa’s moves after January 15 will be watched with curiosity as he is known as an adamant leader.
