The Bangalore University (BU) convocation was held on Thursday at Central College in the absence of governor HR Bhardwaj, who is also the varsity’s chancellor. Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda, who took his place, said Bhardwaj had “prior commitments”.

“The governor had to go to Kerala as he is the acting governor of that state. I stepped in for him at the Mysore University convocation too. He could not attend the convocation due to unavoidable reasons,” said Gowda.

It has been reported that the governor boycotted the convocation because a few procedures—especially regarding recommendations for honorary doctorates—were skipped. The list had been sent by BU vice-chancellor N Prabhu Dev to the governor without the BU syndicate’s approval.

BU registrar BC Mylarappa said the date of convocation was decided on April 2 when, according to norms, the date should be set 45 days in advance.

Honorary doctorates were not presented this time as the list of recommendations submitted to the governor was not approved. Syndicate members said a syndicate meeting was convened on March 24 to discuss the university’s budget.

The VC decided that a meeting would be held on March 29 to discuss the list of honorary doctorates. On March 29, a letter was sent seeking opinions from syndicate members about likely candidates. However, although a meeting was convened for March 31, it was not held.

On April 2, Dev announced the date of the convocation and the next day, he sent a list of suggestions to the governor.

When Dev was questioned about the controversy regarding the honorary doctorates, he accused the media of reporting news without considering the rules. Members of electronic media got upset at this and are now demanding an apology from him.
