A 21-year-old Bescom bill collector, Rukmini, allegedly committed suicide in Muneshwara Layout in Laggere on Monday.

The incident came to light on Tuesday morning. Rukmini had married Dhananjaya, 25, three years ago and the couple has a two-year-old girl child. On Tuesday around 7am, Dhananjaya came home from work. He knocked on the door of the leased house they stayed in, but got no response. When he looked though the window, he saw Rukmini hanging from the ceiling fan with her dupatta.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Rukmini, after giving birth to her daughter two years ago, had become weak. She had taken medicine to gain weight. This disturbed her and she had also spoken about this to her parents and husband. Rukmini’s mother Lakshmamma filed a police complaint, initially alleging dowry harassment but later retracted her statement.

Newly married woman ends life

In another case, an 18-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in her house in Dayananda Colony on Monday night. Faiza Anjum was found hanging from ceiling. Police said Anjum had married Masood, 23, an autorickshaw driver six months ago.

Police said on Monday night, Masood and his family assaulted Anjum and tried to kill her. She sustained serious injuries but escaped to her room, locked herself in and then hanged herself.

Masood, an alcoholic, came home drunk on Monday and joined his family in beating Anjum. They demanded Anjum to get Rs50,000 as dowry.

The incident came to light on Monday midnight. Police rushed to the spot and arrested Masood and his mother.
