Bellary police in trouble after thief dies in custody

Kurugoddu police in Bellary are in eye of an storm after a thief they had detained died after consuming poison kept in the police station.

The thief, Shivaraj, 30, was a resident of Bandihatti in Bellary.

Kurugoddu police had arrested him on Friday and kept him in the police station for inquiry.

On Saturday, he consumed poison kept in the police station. Although the police said he died on Sunday morning, there were certain allegations that he had passed away on Saturday at 7:30pm.

The BJP workers alleged that the doctors held back the information of his death till Sunday morning as there was some foul play. They went so far as to saying that there was some political motive behind this.

Karnataka Milk Federation president G Somashekara Reddy alleged that the police had beaten Shivaraj and killed him in the police station. He said he would discuss the issue with home minister R Ashoka and recommend that that the case be handed over to higher officials for investigation.

According to the police’s version, Shivaraj had consumed poison on Saturday afternoon and was immediately rushed to VIMS Hospital in Bellary.

The police said he had taken the poison bottle kept in the police station, mixed it with water and consumed it.

A postmortem was conducted on his body at 2pm. Police said Shivaraj’s parents, a few friends and tahasildar Shashidhar were present during the postmortem, which, they said, was video captured. The body was handed over to his family about 3pm.

Meanwhile, about 500 people gathered in VIMS Hospital and staged a protest against the police. The crowd turned violent but the police took control of the situation.

Superintendent of police, Bellary, Chandragupta, informed DNA that sub-inspector Ambaraya Kammanamani and assistant sub-inspector Nagaraja were suspended on Saturday night and criminal cases have been registered against them. He added that the poison bottle that Shivaraj had consumed has been seized.

Davanagere IGP Sanjay Sahay visited Bellary on Sunday and told Bellary police to provide additional security in Bandihatti and Kurugoddu to maintain law and order.
