In a span of 12 hours, the city witnessed four suicides. The cases include that of two teenagers, a 20-year-old newly wed woman, and a 25-year-old man. Two of them died while undergoing treatment, a third breathed his last before reaching hospital, and the newly wed was found dead.

Among the deceased was 18-year-old Shobha, upset that her lover would not marry her. She committed suicide by consuming rat poison in a park in Vijaynagar. She was taken to Sharavathi Hospital on Friday, and died while under treatment.

Shobha was a resident of Yagannahalli, near Sunkadhakatte. She was in love with Girish, an Old Guddadhahalli resident, an autorickshaw driver and part-time cab driver with a private travel agency. Shobha wanted the two-year relationship to be firmed up in marriage, but things did not happen as she hoped.

It was only recently that Shobha’s parents came to know of the  affair. They had a talk with Girish and his family. The two families agreed to get the lovers married. However, Girish’s family sought a dowry of `1 lakh. Shobha’s parents could not gather that much money in the time before the wedding.

Shobha asked Girish to persuade his parents to allow her folk time, but Girish told her that his parents were looking for another girl and he could not go against the wishes of his parents.
On Thursday, Shobha left home for work around 9 am. However, she did not attend the office, where she had been working only for the past 10 days. Instead, she headed towards the park where she used to meet Girish regularly. She asked Girish to come to the park, but he did not turn up, even though she waited till 3 pm.
A distraught Shobha consumed rat poison and was found unconscious on the roadside near Vijaynagar bus stand. Locals rushed her to Sharavathi Hospital where she died on Friday.
She was living with her father Srinivas, a security guard, mother and two sisters.

The parents of Girish, however, told the police that Shobha took the extreme step as she was suffering from stomach pain for the past three years. Shobha’s friend Sujatha told the police that the girl could not reconcile to abandonment by Girish.

Shobha’s body was handed over to her family after post-mortem in Victoria Hospital. A case has been registered in Vijayanagar police station.
