The dreams of those intending to step into Sherlock Holmes’ shoes might soon become a reality when the proposed Karnataka Forensic Science Academy comes into existence.

The plan, that is proposed to be implemented by 2018-19, is part of the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratory of the state and aims at keeping pace with the developments in various fields of forensic sciences with enhanced qualities of forensic services.

“It will be an academy with the primary purpose of preparing leaders/scientists in the field of forensic sciences with uprightness, dedication and strong sense of service towards the causes of the field, crime investigation and that of those laid for criminal justice delivery system,” a proposal before the state government said. The proposal also claimed that such an academy will be the first of its kind in the country.

Detailing the purpose of the academy, the proposal stated that the academy will undertake basic/induction training for new recruits as scientists at the entry level of the forensic sciences. “It will primarily impart training through state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies for the forensic scientists, interfacing the provisions of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), Indian Penal code (IPC) and other criminal laws and Indian Evidence Act with forensic activities,” it stated.

The academy will also act as a need-based training programme centre for judicial officers, medical officers, investigating officer and to coordinate with various other academies with similar interest and activities, the proposal stated.

“The long strides made in the field of forensic sciences during the last decade will need to be passed on to the new recruits. The Academy needs to acquire two acres of land and expenses involved will be about Rs6 crore for the administrative block, class rooms and audio-visual facilities besides full-fledged laboratory,” the proposal stated.
