Bangalore University is keen to announce results of its examinations sooner. And the one way to do that would be to get teachers to evaluate more answer scripts each day.

So teachers at colleges affiliated to the university might soon have to evaluate a higher number of answer scripts, starting this academic year.

Sources from the university told DNA that the move is now at a discussion stage, and the next academic council meeting is likely to consider it. RM Ranganath, registrar, said, “We are thinking of increasing the number of scripts that each evaluator does each day, but we have not yet taken any decision in the matter.”

“Currently we are able to announce results in 21 days of the beginning of the evaluation process. We could reduce that time and announce results earlier,” said Ranganath.

At present, teachers at the university evaluate 24 answer scripts each day, 12 each in the morning and afternoon sessions on each day of the evaluation process. The number of scripts they will be expected to evaluate could go up to 30 or 32 each day. “We could reduce the evaluation time by about five to six days. We need to discuss the matter with college principals and teachers associations before arriving at a decision.”

Officials also said that the figure of 24 scripts per day was fixed as questions were subjective-type, and some answers were quite lengthy. Over time, the pattern of examination has changed, and the lengthy answers now are not as many as earlier. “Usually, lengthy answers take more time, as an evaluator has to read the whole answer. With questions that are marked for just one or two marks, the evaluation process takes much less time,” Ranganath said.
However, teachers and principals argue that the evaluation process is one that needs to be done thoroughly, and each answer script requires at least 20 minutes of an evaluator’s time.

BA Srikanta, principal, RBNMS college, said, “If teachers are forced to evaluate more answer scripts in the same time, there is greater likelihood of errors. The problem is one we could easily explain to authorities if we are included in these discussions.”
