Cultural fests conducted by city colleges have not been receiving a great response. This is because students have been bunking the fest ‘for a cause’. Rather than being a part of the song and dance, students, instead, flocked to Freedom Park to take part in Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption movement.

“There were many students who wanted to take part in the anti-corruption movement. There were hardly any students present at the fest,” said Jain Tarun Bantia, student council member of Jain College.

Jain College conducted a fest Anveshana last week. Christ College conducted a science fest on Wednesday and a computer science fest on Thursday. As expected, the audience turnout was low.

“Usually, more teams participate. In fact, the response is just about 50 % because more students are interested in the movement to fight corruption,” said Ashwin Agarwal, a college student who is actively involved in the fest.

The protests have gathered more momentum this week, when compared to last week.

“For a business fest, we felt that there was a good amount of participation,” said Abhimanyu Mani, student treasurer of St Joseph’s College of Commerce.

“It is true that the attendance at college was low last week, owing to the movement. In fact, there was an exhibition at the Reserve Bank of India, on ‘Foreign exchange for you,’ which also had an interactive session for students. However, not many students attended the session because they wanted to go to Freedom Park. Since students were so enthusiastic about it, we encouraged them to take part in the movement,” said Dr Mythili P Rao, director of School of Graduate Studies Jain University on JC Road.
