At Chokkarasanapalli village, Hosur taluk, Tamil Nadu, there was shock as news spread of the death of Abhilash L, 13, at the Sparsh Hospital. The boy had died in the accident on Wednesday, when the bus of St Philomena’s High School turned turtle on  Sarjapura-Bagalur Road.

Abhilash’s parents Lokesh, 40, a farmer, and Varalakshmi, a teacher at the Swami Vivekananda Nursery and Primary School in the village, were initially numb with shock. Relatives had told the couple that their son was under intensive care, undergoing treatment. Long after Abhilash had died, no one could muster the courage to inform the parents.

The truth was out before long, and relatives softly whispered the sad news to the parents. The body was taken to Anekal Government Hospital from Sparsh Hospital for post-mortem, before being handed to the family.

Sub-inspector Raghavendran M said, “The parents were in shock, and we had to break the news gently.” Late on Wednesday night, Lokesh still waited for news of his son, unaware of the death.
By noon on Thursday, the post-mortem was completed and the body arrived in the village. Chokkarasanapalli, which has around 200 houses, was enveloped in gloom. More than 500 people gathered at Abhilash’s house. Villagers from neighbouring villages streamed in too, to offer condolences.

Gopalappa, who was at the site of the accident, said the driver was drunk. He claimed that a teacher of the school had arrived at the site and told by-standers that one of the drivers at the school had celebrated his birthday on Wednesday. The drivers had gathered for a drink, and even as Govindaraju, 32, took to the wheels, he was tipsy.

Abhilash had only been admitted to St Philomena’s High School only this year. Last year, he had finished class five at the Swami Vivekananda Nursery and Primary School in the village, where his mother is a teacher. Abhilash’s younger sister, Anusha, is a student of class five in the village school, the highest class in that school.

The body of Abhilash was cremated at 1 pm. His parents were seen crying loudly.  Relatives did their best to console the couple. In his time of grief, Lokesh was seen holding his daughter Anusha.

Villagers said that information about the accident was not given to them by the school or the police. Commuters on the road who witnessed the accident arrived to tell the villagers about it. That was how the information first reached the village.

Two students from Chokkarasanapalli village went to St Philomena’s School.
