Mount Carmel College is organising the Avani '11 on January 28 and 29. It's an awareness programme that addresses environment-related issues.

"This field has a huge potential; it just needs to be tapped well. Most students are not aware of the opportunities and shirk away presuming that it is not a money-making field," said Aishwarya Krishnan, a final-year environmental science student. Of late, there has been a decrease in their number of students opting for this course, she added.

In its second year, the fest is focusing on sustainable development. She also cited an instance where a student took up the course after the fest, last year. The fest is open to students from class 8 to post-graduate levels.

The two-day eco schedule
Day 1: ‘Shout Out’ — A day of fun and frolic in the green! A day of opportunities in which all students will enjoy outdoor activities to understand various issues and be enlightened by creative insights on how to express their green ideas, including street-plays.
An interactive session will be held with many  green companies and NGOs about internships and
job opportunities to motivate the students.
The events include:
Avani unplugged, outdoor activities, and interactive sustainable development workshops.

Day 2: ‘Speak up’— Green careers at your door step! A series of seminars, will be conducted on
Biodiversity Blues, where speakers will express their views on  dying forests and their vanishing components
Eco Craze, where ordinary people with extraordinary drive to protect the earth, will talk about their initiatives
Sustainable Souls, where speakers will talk about striking an equilibrium between the environment and development
