Waiting to get a site in the Kempegowda Layout of the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA)? You will have to wait a while longer.

The state cabinet on Friday put off its decision on the financial package for farmers in the light of a steep increase in compensation awarded to those whose lands have been acquired for the layout.

As a result, the much-awaited Kempegowda Layout, pending for a decade, is likely to be delayed even further.

Addressing the media after the cabinet meeting, higher education minister VS Acharya said, "After a detailed discussion, the cabinet decided to defer the matter. A decision will be taken after a review of the compensation package, which, at present, is proving to be costly for the state government."

After several rounds of negotiations with the farmers, BDA worked out a compensation package according to which `80 lakh to `1crore would be offered as compensation, plus one site for every acre of land.

As per estimates, for the 4,200 acres acquired, the state would have to pay `3,700 crore as compensation. That would prove very costly, and the state has to examine the financial implications.

"If we give compensation of that amount, then for other layouts too we would have to follow the same thing," said Acharya.

As per the compensation package, if farmers do not wish to accept compensation money, they could get 40% of developed land; and if they opt for compensation, they will get one 40x60 site plus the compensation amount.
