Ajmal PM, 18, a student of Sha-Shib College who suffered burn injuries under mysterious circumstances in his college hostel, died on Thursday while undergoing treatment in Victoria Hospital.
Although police had filed an attempt-to-murder case based on the statement given by Ajmal from his hospital bed on March 22, the investigation has led to a dead end. In fact, the police said that Ajmal's statements did not tally with their findings.

When DNA spoke to Ajmal's parents, they revealed that Ajmal had saved a file on his computer, which could help solve the mystery behind his death.

"Ajmal was not able to tell us exactly whether it was a video footage or a letter he had written. But we heard him say that the video of ragging was saved on his desktop," said Abdul Fathah, Ajmal's uncle, adding that the computer was password-protected.

"As we were trying hard to save Ajmal's life, we did not focus much on the police investigation or the file he saved in his computer," said Fathah. He added that Ajmal told about the file to some of his friends in Kannur.

"Until now, we were fighting to save Ajmal's life. Now that he is dead, we will take legal action against those responsible," he said.

Ajmal's last words
Ajmal, while fighting for his life, gave a statement to the police that they will have to question three students- Salman Suresh, Sachin and Anil Raj.

Hostel vigilance
Police investigations revealed that the authorities lock the hostel gate by 8 pm every night.  A watchman too has been deployed to keep guard in the premises.

If anyone has to enter the hostel premises, they have to enter their name in the ledger, but the names stated by Ajmal have not entered in the ledger. The boys who Ajmal had accused of murder attempt were in Kerala at the time of the incident.

A damp squib
Fathah said that the claim about maintaining visitor's ledger is a hogwash.

"The day I visited the hostel, there were many outsiders in the premises. How can they explain that? Asked Fathah.

Money-back policy
Ajmal, in his last moments, stated that he had to steal his mother's gold chain to escape the wrath of the students who were ragging him. After the trio got to know about Ajmal's confession, they returned `20,000 to his mother. Sachin even begged for mercy and asked Ajmal's mother to spare him.

Since the boys accused were from affluent families, they did not want their reputation tarnished, said Fathah.

Police lax
Sources said the policemen remained lax about Ajmal's case until the media got wind of the situation.

The policemen even failed to seal and lock the bathroom where the fire incident took place. The bathroom was left open and the maintenance staff had already washed the bathroom, thereby wiping out every trace of evidence. At this point, it would be difficult for the forensic science laboratory (FSL) experts to conduct tests to nab the culprits.
