A 26-year-old woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in her house in Moodalpalya on Nagarbhavi Road on Sunday.

The family of the husband of the deceased, Archana, said she had committed suicide by hanging. The police, however, were not ruling out foul play.

Archana’s parents reportedly told the police that she had been harassed for a car and site as dowry.

A BCom graduate from Tyagarajanagar, Archana was married to Uma Mahesh, a call centre employee, in March last. The couple had a six-month-old son.

The police took Mahesh and his parents Muniraju and Munirathnamma into custody, based on a complaint by Harikrishna, Archana’s father; however, no arrest was registered, police said.

“Mahesh and his family members harassed my daughter for dowry. She informed us of the harassment several times. They had been beating my daughter, but we were helpless as we had already spent a lot of money for her marriage,” said Harikrishna.

Mahesh reportedly told the police that his wife had committed suicide using a sari around 7 am. He also said that he was at work and his parents were sleeping when she took the extreme step.

The police, however, could not find any marks on her neck suggesting suicide with a sari which she had reportedly used to hang herself from a ceiling fan.

Investigators claimed that the woman’s face bore tell-tale signs of an assault. Though they felt that Archana was strangled to death, police were waiting for the post-mortem examination report to initiate further action.

Police and Archana’s relatives said they found her body on the floor.  The young mother had returned to Mahesh’s house after delivery only a month ago.

While she was at her parents place for delivery, she had complained of harassment over dowry by Mahesh and his family, the woman’s relatives said.

Archana’s parents alleged that they had given Mahesh Rs50,000 and 250 gm gold as dowry. But he started demanding a car and a site a few months after the wedding.

The woman’s relatives told the police that the couple had fought over arrangements for the naming ceremony of their son. Mahesh reportedly demanded that his wife’s parents hold the ceremony in a hall. They refused, saying much money had been spent on the marriage and also for the  delivery. The ceremony was held in Mahesh’s house.  Archana’s body was handed over to her family after post-mortem at Victoria Hospital. The Chandra Layout police registered cases of unnatural death and dowry harassment, and were investigating.
