Bangalore police eye will watch over criminal elements

The city police commissioner has been asked to visit at least one police station every Monday to gather first-hand information on its functioning.

An initiative, the police eye, to keep a watch over anti-social elements, was among a slew of measures home minister R Ashoka has announced to curb crimes in the city.

Speaking to reporters after a review meeting with senior police officers, Ashoka said the police eye would require all anti-social elements to report to their jurisdictional police stations once a month. Their family members, too, would be summoned to the stations, he said.

Police eye is expected to prevent criminals from moving to others parts of the state to commit offences.

Police officers will be send to foreign countries for training in technical and scientific investigation methods, the minister said.

The city police would get more patrol vehicles, both cheetahs and Hoysalas, Ashoka said, while addressing the media after a review meeting at the DGP’s office.

Disciplinary action, including suspension from service, would be initiated against those assistant commissioners of police failing to maintain law and order in their areas of jurisdiction.
The review meeting decided to focus on avoiding any underworld activity in the city. “Bangalore is the face of the state,” the minister said, adding that the police would put in all efforts to maintain its clean image.

The meeting also decided to watch over security guards from North India, who were licenced to use firearms. The police would not allow anyone to hire a gunman. “We will give permission to have a gunman only if the need is genuinely,” he added. Ashoka clarified that the police had not given permission to live-bands to perform in the city bars. However, bars and pubs have been permitted to recruit women bar tenders.

Listing out the other measures taken by the state government to curb crime, he said that the crackdown on betting had forced those involved in the racket to move out of the state.
He said the state would provide all the necessary infrastructure to enable police enhance its performance. But warned those displaying any slackness would be dealt with sternly.
