Checks in watering holes enabled Thyagarajanagar police to crack the murder case of a 23-year-old man whose body was found in a gunny bag in Bhyrappa Block on February 5.

Although his identity could not be established immediately, medical examination revealed that the victim had consumed alcohol.

Armed with this information and photos of the victim, police visited bars and restaurants coming under south division.

Their efforts proved fruitful as staff members of Manjushree Bar in Jayanagar identified the victim as a regular customer. They also gave them his address.

The deceased was Narayanaswamy, a resident of AK Colony, near KR Road. He was a photographer by profession.

The police visited his home and questioned his family about his friends and foes.

An autorickshaw driver Venu Gopal was said to be not on good terms with Narayanaswamy.

The police picked up Venu, who, after a detailed interrogation, confessed to murdering Narayanaswamy.

Police inspector C Mahadev said Venu and his wife Lakshmi used to stay near Narayanaswamy’s house. Lakshmi worked as a domestic help in a nearby house.

Killed to take revenge
Narayanaswamy had a weakness for women and he tried to have physical relation with Lakshmi when her husband had gone to Sabarimala. Lakshmi objected to this and threatened to file a complaint against him.

Later, when her husband came back from the pilgrimage, Lakshmi told him about Narayanaswamy’s behaviour.
Venu wanted vengeance and sought the help of his friends Harish and Pratap.

The three invited Narayanaswamy for a party at Venu’s brother-in-law’s house, where they forced him to consume alcohol.

When Narayanaswamy was sloshed after couple of drinks, Venugopal slit his throat, put the body in a gunny bag and dumped it at an isolated place in Bhyrappa Block.

The victim had several names tattooed on his hands and chest, including the names of two women, Geetha and Ramya.
