To groom aspiring women politicians by helping them develop the requisite skills, the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B), on Tuesday, launched a certificate course in political leadership. The three-month ‘India-Women in Leadership’ programme by the Centre for Public Policy (CPP) aims to equip aspiring women leaders with requisite skills, knowledge and expertise in various aspects of governance.

Rigorous training
The students will be posted in their consituency where they will work on constituency profiling, competition analysis and SWOT analysis. They will be trained on creating websites, delivering speeches and getting launched into politics.

“We are looking for women who have some amount of exposure in politics. Through the initial application form, which is detailed, we are gauging  candidates’ motivation and involvement in politics. We might consider those with practical exposure or women from NGOs interested in advocacy or politics,” said Harveen Kaur, coordinator of the programme.

The course seeks to strengthen their ability to contest elections, lobby for women's rights and strengthen the overall network of politically active women across India. The objective is to correct the imbalance in the Indian political landscape where women hold a mere 10% of seats in the parliament, the statement added.

On the occasion, MV Rajeev Gowda, chairperson of the Center for Public Policy (CPP) at IIM-B, claimed that the country “needs leaders who balance passion for public service, compassion for the disadvantaged, professionalism in governance, and courage built on values and vision.”

“Political leaders in India perform a variety of roles. They are expected to be legislators, policy implementers, problem solvers, CEOs of their constituencies as well as party activists,” added Gowda.

“This course is practical and multidimensional and will equip participants with cutting-edge capabilities that will enable them to enter, progress and make an impact in the political arena,” he added.

City-based Centre for Social Research (CSR), an NGO working on gender empowerment, is also an active partner in designing the course. Ranjana Kumari and Gowda also launched the programmes website, www.womenleadership.in

The cost of the programme is `4.75 lakh. The first batch starts on July 16.

The 40-day contact-based programme will be held in Bangalore for six weeks and for one week in Delhi (to coordinate with the monsoon session of parliament). The course will also be held in 10 weeks in Singapore.
