Bangalore engineering students make products of projects

Innovating thinking and rarely-seen projects came to the fore at an exhibition at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering as students showcased their works based on mechanical engineering.

The projects showed a lot of promise with some in the process to hit the markets. One such work — the six-leg operated robot — fabricated for rough terrains, can be used to design support system for the physically-disabled.

Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology has approved funding to the prototype. The model would be transformed into a product and later go on to be marketed.
Vikram Singh, one of the four students who worked on the model, said it was completed in four months. “The motion is controlled by a set of programmes and can be operated by joystick, remote control, or by computer,” he said.

Another eye-catching model in the exhibition was a multi-purpose robot designed for use in various purposes like drilling and milling. It is said to be an Indian make of the US military robot that was frequently used to defuse bombs in Iraq.

“Innovation can happen even in a small workplace, a classroom and college lab,” said CPS Prakash, head of department, Mechanical Engineering, Dayananda Sagar College.
