While the BBMP commissioner Siddaiah has directed his subordinates to clear all the encroachments on storm water drains (SWD) in the city, his men are ‘deliberately’ ignoring the order resulting in more encroachments. A storm water drain, which runs from Herohalli Lake, was allegedly encroached by Bajaj Trust. According to Harish, the 60ft SWD was reduced to just 20 ft for nearly one kilometre.
“I was going towards Tippagondanahalli reservoir when I saw a JCB dumping debris on storm water drain at Bajaj Trust land. I immediately stopped the encroachment and seized the vehicle. The drain, which was about 60 ft wide, has been reduced to 20 ft,” he said.
Harish immediately called the assistant engineer Devaraj, assistant executive engineer Ramesh and chief engineer Munikrishna to the spot and took them to task for their failure to identify the encroachment. He directed them to file a police complaint against the Bajaj trust members and take legal action against them. He also directed the chief engineer to fence the land and suspend the assistant engineer for his negligence.
Harish said the 400-acre land on Magadi Road was given by Jawaharlal Nehru to the Bajaj Trust. The storm water drain runs from the nearby Herohalli Lake towards the Bajaj trust land.
“We have developed the lake at Rs4 crore and the excess water will flow through the drain. But they are illegally dumping construction debris and encroaching the land,” he said.
Corporator Gangabyraiah said that while corporators were acting as watchdogs, officials, who should maintain vigil over encroachments, were sleeping.
