Bangalore Mahanagara Palike does a volte-face, drops its plan to set a 10-day cap for idol immersion
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has given a silent burial to its own proposal to set a 10-day deadline for celebration of Ganesha festival in public places.
During the budget discussion on Friday, the BBMP councillors had urged the Mayor to set the 10-day deadline for the Ganesh immersion as festivities had been dragging on for up to six months and had become a public nuisance. Mayor R Sharadamma had acceded to the members’ demand and said that a resolution would be adopted in this regard by the House soon.
DNA on Monday spoke to mayor Sharadamma, who said that the palike was keen on setting a deadline. “But we received hundreds of letters from the public to not to set up any deadline as Ganesha festival is a national festival. Respecting the public sentiment, we have dropped the idea for now. But we will discuss the issue thoroughly and think of implementing it next year,” she said.
Smooth water supply
Deevarajeevanahalli corporator R Sampath Raj raised the issue of water supply during the coming festivals during a BBMP council meeting on Monday. “There is no proper water supply during the festive season. People are facing lot of water problems,” he said.
BWSSB additional chief engineer V Mahesh said they are trying to provide water supply to all the wards during the festivals. “From Tippagondanahalli reservoir, we usually pump 20 mld of water. But from Sunday night, we are pumping 40 mld of water. From Cauvery, we are pumping 25 mld additional water. BWSSB assistant engineers and assistant executive engineers will work round the clock to ensure water supply to all the wards. Water tankers have also been arranged.
