Within days of arresting a businessman on the charges of using satellite phone, which is banned in the country, the police have arrested another businessman for the offence.

DNA recently reported that a city-based stock exchange consultant was held for possessing a satellite phone. A couple of days after that, the police, on December 15, arrested a businessman in Amruthahalli who had been using satellite phone.

The central crime branch (CCB) police team got to know that Jagadeep Desai, a businessman and a resident of Amruthahalli, was using a satellite phone. The joint team of CCB and BSNL officials raided his house on December 15 and arrested him. They seized a Thuraya satellite phone, its charger, warranty card and eight recharge coupons. He was produced in court, which granted him bail after he paid Rs1,000 as fine.

The police said Desai was using the phone to make business calls. The police said Desai told them that a friend from Dubai gave him the phone. The police are clueless as to why airport custom officials did not seize the phone. Subramanya Swamy, whom Cubbon Park police had held for using satellite phone, too, had procured his phone from abroad. The police are verifying how the phones were brought to the city.

Lack of awareness
Joint commissioner of police for crime (east), B Dayanand, said both businessmen were using satellite phones because they did not know that these phones are banned in India. He said the police checked the antecedents of the duo and concluded that they were using the phone only for business purposes.

CCB and BSNL officials are trying to trace those who are using satellite phones in the city. This move follows the directive of the ministry of home affairs, which has asked police commissioners to trace those who use satellite phones. It is these phones that the terrorists use to communicate as the calls are difficult to monitor or trace. The terrorists behind 26/11, too, had used Thuraya satellite phone to perpetrate the attack.
