A goldsmith was grievously injured after being shot at by unknown assailants at his shop in Kumbarpet on Sunday. The victim, Mukhtar Hussain, 28, has been admitted to Victoria Hospital. Doctors said Hussain sustained multiple injuries to his intestine, but is out of danger.

Hussain told the police that he neither knew the assailants nor the motive for the attack on him.
Three assailants barged in at 8.45pm when Hussain and his five employees were in the shop, located on the first floor of Gulshan Mansion.

The assailants, who held Hussain at gunpoint, shot him after he raised an alarm.
One of the attackers missed his mark twice. The third shot wounded Hussain in the stomach.
The police, who recovered one bullet, said the bullet was shot from a 9mm pistol.

Before neighbours could assemble at the spot, two assailants had fled. The third climbed a wall and escaped from the adjacent building.

Neighbours, who rushed to the spot, shifted Hussain to Victoria Hospital in an autorickshaw. They did not wait for an ambulance as the area is congested.

The goldsmith’s wife, Naseera, and other family members rushed to the hospital. Hussain and his employees hail from Rajasthan. He has been residing in the city for the past six years.
Joint commissioner of police B Dayanand and deputy commissioner of police (central) Ramesh visited the spot and Victoria Hospital later in the night.

Witnesses said the assailants were not wearing hoods.
The person who fired the bullet at Hussain wore a black jacket.Employees held at gunpoint. One of the employees, Rehmat, attempted to disarm one of the assailants.

However, he had to back down since he was threatened at gunpoint. Rehmat was also beaten up.

The employees, all in their teens, had no other go but to stand in silence when one of assailants pulled the trigger, injuring Hussain.

The shop is located just 200m from Hussain’s residence. Since it was a Sunday, the employees were not working. When shots rang out from the shop, the neighbours mistook it to be the sound of fireworks.

However, another neighbour, Kabir,  said: “When there was noise, I thought it was a fight among Hussain’s employees. Later, an employee ran out of the shop and informed us about the incident and ran to Hussain’s house.”
