The department of food and civil supplies is planning to provide fresh ration cards to those who do not possess one. The department would make an effort to make it easier for the applicants by carrying out the process online through its official website, said BA Harish Gowda, secretary, department of food and civil supplies on Tuesday.

“After we are done with the exercise of eliminating bogus ration cards, catching hold of illegal LPG consumers and creating a database of all records, we will let people who do not possess ration cards to apply fresh through our online endeavours,” he said.

Either revenue registration number of the electricity bill or unique identification number, if available is mandatory for applying online.
The National Informatics Centre will help the department to create the database.

“Creating an error-free database is a huge task. Right now we are validating data available with us. The  process is going to take more time,” he said.

“We will publish a list of illegal LPG connection holders after the data entry,” he said.

Gowda said that many eligible people were deprived of  ration cards as some exploited their rights. “According to  PDS Act, a household possessing one ration card is eligible for only one LPG connection. But there are people who possess more than one LPG connection. It means that somebody else’s consumer rights are being exploited,” said Gowda.
