Former president of India APJ Abdul Kalam has a vision for the not-so-distant future, a world knowledge platform to be set up by India wherein issues of importance to mankind will be dealt with through research.

Kalam, announced this on Monday at the presentation ceremony of the Infosys Prize 2011.

“I propose a world knowledge platform, which will be a joint collaborative project between private sector and the government in terms of funding where missions of addressing issues such as disaster management, agricultural innovation and aerospace will be taken up. I see it as a research laboratory where the best scientific minds of India and abroad will collaborate,” he said during the ceremony where he was the chief guest.

Kalam said self-sustenance was the key to addressing several problems faced by the country.  “Due to patenting rules, the latest technology from other countries will not be available in India for at least a decade,” he said.

“The challenges faced by India today are in creating sustainable agriculture, providing clean water to everyone, access to green energy and providing customised health care that will increase life expectancy,” he said.

Kalam said the temperament of conduction research should be inculcated right from the beginning for students in India.

“India has an opportunity with its youth to promote research as a viable option,” he said.

He suggested that the winners of the Infosys Science Prize, which was started in 2009, should become assets to universities in the country.
