The murder of Gandhinagar corporator S Nataraj in September has sent chills down the spines of councillors as they are making a beeline to city police commissioner's office, seeking security.

Fearing repetition of the daylight killing on Sampige Road, many corporators are believed to be filling out application forms requesting the police to provide them security stating threat to their lives.

Recently, a group of corporators along with officials of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike visited the city police commissioner's office to put forward their request for security. The corporators explained the kind of threats to them. About 50 councillors have sought security from the police.

The corporators, who have applied for police security, reportedly include T Mallesh and RS Satyanarayana, who represent Subashnagar and Dattatreya Temple wards, respectively.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a police officer said that many corporators seeking security are involved in conflict with local people because of the illegal activities.

The corporators have complained that they might be targeted for extortion, over grudge and long-standing rivalry. The ones already receiving security reportedly told the police that they were not satisfied as they have only one gunman assigned for. Sources said that multiple gunmen can be provided only if the corporators have high risk to their lives.

The corporators told police that they fear going out alone during the night after the murder of Nataraj. Some also complained of receiving threat calls from the mafia.

The corporators have also approached their respective political parties, chief minister and home minister regarding the issue.
Confirming the pouring in of applications for security from corporators, additional commissioner of police Suneel Kumar T said that a decision will be taken after proper inquiry.

“The request has come to us. We are going to check the names of the corporators who are on the list. Providing security to all the corporators in the city is not a small thing. If the reasons filed by them in the request application are valid then a gunman will be deployed to them," he said.

Suneel added a lot of groundwork is required before providing security. The activities of the corporators will be collected from the jurisdiction police, he said.
